They seem to do melee attacks whenever there is someone around and they are not doing a precept special ability, and what you mod on the weapon does not seem to play any role in that. Similarly, their attack animation seems to be roughly the same all the time. If a Lich is present in the node it will convert nearby enemies into thralls as well at the same rate.
