The question: What would happen to their Characters, if the subscription ends? Will they disappear? Lose the paid content (which might make them unusable in cases like race)?

Luckily, D&D Beyond has a method to let players share sourcebooks with each other. To use this method, at least one person in a campaign must have a Master Tier subscription to D&D Beyond. This person can be the Dungeon Master, but they don't have to be - any player can contribute the subscription, then enable sharing in that campaign.I have the free content use of the beyond software. This is getting really bad, when I share my content with friends joining my campaign, they randomly get or don't get the shared content. Even the base Players Handbook, they can't see all the classes and backgrounds, even though they are using the character that is part of the campaign with content sharing.

Depending on player numbers, you could potentially shunt all the non-paid players into one (maybe two?) of your shared content campaigns.
