It took me a while to get a good enough feel for the letter spacing that I could distinguish wide vs close AM at a glance. The easiest way for me is checking the ME gap rather than the AM gap. The letters are all very evenly spaced in the wide AM design, while that gap is noticeably longer than the others in the close AM version.
