Unless you consider it "cheating" (pretty much nobody does), use the pz map to find stuff. This is pretty much it. Black rectangles are usually the warehouses. North of Rosewood and north of lake ivy (if you have it installed) come to mind.
Go on sandbox and turn "starting population" down to 0.2 or 0.3. More zombies will spawn later on but your first day will be significantly easier. In designing the map's buiuldings, I tried to make them as aesthetically pleasing which necessitated the use of some short wall tiles normally used for wall trimming in vanilla maps. It's not an exaggeration. Muldraugh is second, Rosewood is third, and Riverside is fourth. Riverside is the best beginner location.
