Archidermaptera.

Archidermaptera is one of the four suborders of earwigs in the order Dermaptera. The other three are Arixeniina, Forficulina, and Hemimerina. It is the only extinct suborder of earwigs, and contains one family, with six genera. It has a fossil record extending into the Jurassic, with fossils from that period. These have unsegmented cerci and tarsi with 4-5 segments.

We summarize the distributions and ages of all described fossil Archidermaptera and infer that the Dermaptera might have originated in Eurasia and started their diversification and migration to a worldwide distribution. The new taxon of Abrderma gracilentum gen. et sp. nov. provides one more example of an early earwig with well-preserved ...Among Archidermaptera the cerci were long and filimentous with many cercomeres (Zhang, 1994;Xing et al., 2016), while in Eodermaptera they were shortened with a reduced number of cercomeres (Zhao ...Some earwig specimen fossils are placed with extinct suborders Archidermaptera or Eodermaptera, the former dating to the Late Triassic and the latter to the Middle Jurassic. Dermaptera belongs to the major grouping Polyneoptera , and are amongst the earliest diverging members of the group, alongside angel insects ( Zoraptera ), and stoneflies ...The Archidermaptera comprise ten fossil species from the Jurassic with segmented cerci in adults and four or five segmented tarsi (Bey-Bienko, 1936). Both character states are considered primitive for Dermaptera and used as diagnostic features.

Applanatiforceps shares the typical characters of the extinct suborder Archidermaptera (e.g., pentamerous meta tarsi, filiform and multimerous cerci) and externalized ovipositor. The family identity of the Protodiplatyidae can be further distinguished by comparing this new genus with other genera of the Protodiplatyidae. This new family, characterized by an unexpected combination of primitive and derived characters, is bridging the missing link between suborders of Archidermaptera and Eodermaptera. Phylogenetic analyses support the new family to be a new clade at the base of previously defined Eodermaptera and to be a stem group of (Eodermaptera+Neodermaptera).

Evolutional history and origin of Dermaptera have been in contention, with dramatically different viewpoints by contemporary authors. It is suggested that the oldest Dermaptera might possibly be traced back to the Late Triassic-Early Jurassic and they had divided into Archidermaptera and (Eodermaptera+Neodermaptera) in the Middle Jurassic.
