The air drier has nothing to do with the engine and is a part of the air system for brakes and chassis air. Cost about 2 to 3 hundred dollars and should be replaced every 2 to 4 years.

Check the tach sensor in the flywheel housing first, for bare wires or loose connections. It should be on the lower right hand side looking at the flywheel. The ecm and the tach in the cab use the same sensor on the engine. You can also swap the plugs at the sensor to see if that helps.
