Some dolostones are fossiliferous. Fossiliferous dolostones usually have poorly-preserved fossil "ghosts" (see above photo). Rarely, fine-grained dolostones have soft-bodied fossil preservation. Crystalline-textured dolostones appear secondary in origin. They are typically interpreted as chemically-altered fossiliferous limestones.
