Also the heavy two handed attack closes the distance pretty quick while hitting multiple enemies. You are right though the downward slashes are kinda shitty, definatly not an opening attack. I recommend going black pyro. You could go sharp or raw on the Scythe and buff it or go with chaos /dark infusion. Or you could try a hollow build and try to bleed people. I think the corvian Scythe is also a good option, as it has great bleed. Try out the Great Scythe with sharp or raw and then buff it with a spell, might do a fair bit more ...
