Sure there's faster XP, but if you start shamans today, and your buddy chins to 90 range, you will get to 5k kills first. In that specific example you could say that the chins are zero time since you need to train hunter anyways, but I think birdhouses to 99 is the best route, provided you care about post 99 farming XP.
