Faceguard still has its uses thanks to it's prayer bonuses and the fact that you're not using any scales with it. and it still has the best str bonus in the game tied with Serp helm which has slightly better def bonuses and poison/venom immunity, BUT you're wasting money while defending yourself. I think it's a pretty fair change to be honest.
