In my playthroughs, I try to save a group of them & have them wander around my base performing basic tasks, like putting all the corpses in a pile. They can be a bit buggy though. If left off screen for a while, a npc can decimate a large amount of zombies. If a npc has a gun & is hostile, they can kill you pretty quickly.
