What you had to do to get around it was to make sure everything zomboid related got uninstalled/deleted and reinstall the full game. That said the aforementioned Cheat Menu mod is great for fixing these types of bugs and is actually the only reason I have that mod myself. The occasional deadly bugs can be annoying.
