That sounds good, I've built the perimeter defense system before, it was in a seamoth I sadly lost. I thought it was a passive thing that was constantly on, but I guess I use it like it tool from the way you described it.

Instead of dealing with a hull reinforcement, you should build the seamoth defense perimeter. Give the reaper a good shock and it should leave you alone for a few minutes, enough time to repair your seamoth real fast and to also be able to explore.
