Smart players also see that a few blue shards and you can drop (prime) Flow from your build which opens up a lot of potential. Far from useless. Reds are far more niche to me. Without tauforged, you have to dedicate most of your slots for a mediocre gain (3 shards gets you a continuity, 5 just shy of a prime continuity).
TL;DR version: Archon shards would feel more exciting if they were weaker (for example, 5% ability strength each) but you got more of them, more often. Plus being able to then combine the smaller ones into big ones, with a few tiers (Tauforged being the highest tier) means it would still be a cool long term goal.

If you're getting 2 shards per week (?), roughly 100 per year. On average, 20 tau-forged, 80 normal. And upgrading those 80 gives another 16. Even if you get super unlucky and get zero tau-forged over an entire year, you'd still get 20 (assuming 5:1).
