The Volkssturm was organized in September 1944 under command of Heinrich Himmler to bring all people between 16 and 60 to weapons. The units were normally commanded by former soldiers which had already combat experience from WWI or elsewhere. In smaller districts or villages they also used local authority members to command the local units.
